SHOULD THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM??
On March 20, Governor Sisolak issued an emergency executive order requiring all non-essential businesses in Nevada to close. This directive grants local governments additional authority to impose civil penalties, including fining and revoking licenses, of businesses that do not comply.
Not everyone agrees with Governor Sisolak’s actions. Annie Black, candidate for Assembly District 19, feels that further action is required by the Governor. His decision to shut down Nevada’s entire gaming industry will result in massive unemployment and bankruptcies. Ms. Black is urging Governor Sisolak to call a Special Legislative Session to implement several measures designed to lessen the financial devastation Nevadans will suffer. Several examples are:
• Elimination of state business license fees
• Statewide cuts in sales tax
• Reduction in auto registration fees to a flat $50 per vehicle.
Thomas Mitchell, a Nevada Journalist and Blogger poses the question: Is the lockdown of schools and businesses creating more problems than it solves?
Mr. Mitchell quotes Dr. David Katz, founding director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center at Yale university in Connecticut who advocates a more “surgical strike” approach. This entails focusing on a much smaller portion of the population, namely those who are most vulnerable, while allowing most of society to return to normal, thereby preventing economic collapse. Since Nevada’s statistics (190 cases and only 2 deaths) are nowhere near California or New York, this approach may be reasonable.
